In the depths of gray, a rainbow's trace

2024

In the dance of line across paper, I discover a universe of possibilities. The rigidity of the stroke transforms into fluidity, drawing a rainbow of shapes and emotions. The surface, docile and yielding, becomes a canvas to capture the essence of light, its multicolored spectrum trapped in a symphony of lines and shadows.

This work is a tribute to the simplicity and strength of line, its ability to create worlds from a single element. It celebrates the flexibility and versatility of paper, transforming into a vessel for dreams and ideas.

Inspired by the beauty of the rainbow, I invite the viewer to dive into a kaleidoscope of lines and colors, to lose themselves in the dance of light and shadow. It's an invitation to reflect on the nature of perception, beauty, and transformation.

In the Depths of Gray, a Rainbow’s Trace

Archival photograph of a temporary paper sculpture

“In the Depths of Gray, a Rainbow’s Trace” is part of a photographic series documenting temporary paper sculptures constructed from pages of a health and self-care magazine. Each sculpture is carefully assembled through tension and balance, photographed at the precise moment before the structure begins to collapse.

The title is metaphorical. It reflects on identity — on how, within environments that may appear uniform or restrained, a spectrum of color can quietly emerge. The selected magazine pages were chosen intentionally for their chromatic range, subtly alluding to the colors of the LGBTQ+ flag. What at first reads as formal composition reveals a layered narrative about visibility, self-recognition, and presence.

The use of health and self-care imagery is deliberate. The material carries messages of well-being, discipline, and bodily awareness. By restructuring these pages into fragile architectural forms, the work transforms ideas of care into acts of construction and resistance. Identity is not imposed onto the material; it is revealed through careful selection and reconfiguration.

Each sculpture exists only temporarily. The act of building requires patience, concentration, and mindfulness. The photograph becomes both documentation and preservation — capturing a moment of equilibrium that no longer exists. The image holds together color, tension, and time.

This work reflects on how identity can persist and unfold even within structures that seem neutral or predefined. The rainbow is not decorative; it is a trace — a quiet assertion of presence within complexity.

Printed with archival materials, the artwork preserves a fleeting configuration of paper, light, and intention.
